Warp

WARP. Noun. Most probably coined before the 12th century, from the Old English wearp, akin to Old High German warf warp; the Old English weorpan meant to throw; and the Old Norse verpa. 1 a: a series of yarns extended lengthwise in a loom and crossed by the weft b: foundation, base [the warp of the economic structure is agriculture — American Guide Series: North Carolina]2: a rope for warping or mooring a ship or boat3 [2warp] a: a twist or curve that has developed in something originally flat or straight [a warp in a door panel] b: A MENTAL ABERRATION. {from good old Merriam and Webster}

I feel I just came from a wormhole and warped back to reality. It's been exactly a month since I last posted here. A lot has happened since April 26, including Angels and Demons, Star Trek and well... BFF. Welcome back to me.

Speaking of StarTrek, that classic popularized the word warp with "warp drive technology" being the posited power behind interstellar travel within the Federation of Planets. In the star trek universe, having knowledge of warping or travelling faster than light meant the difference between being “developed” enough to be invited into the Federation or being just a case study for Vulcans to surreptitiously gawk at in their fascinatingly logical way.

My ecstasy at being able to watch Startrek on the big screen (again) and reveling in the resuscitation of this great sci-fi tradition has been diminished by the current stream of events. As soon as I stepped out of the cool comfort of the cinema, I warp back to Philippine reality… allow me to ramble on and summarize my most unsettling observations for the past three weeks…

The Great Book Blockade has been simmering. I wonder if my my Star Trek books fall under the category of “educational materials.” Well, I learned a lot from them. I became more interested in science and learning because of Mr. Spock. The Spock character inspired me to explore Logic. Tolkien’s Elvish poems reintroduced me to poetry. Bram’s Stoker’s Dracula tittilated the Gothic side of me. Hmmm… These books can really be dangerous. Perhaps they must be burned.

N1H1 Ewan. More people die of malaria everyday than this N1H1 flu strain. So what is the fuss all about, really? The point probably is that there are those getting richer and more publicity with money and policy attention now being focused on this virus. But the social roots of the problem is still left largely undiscussed. Here in the Philippines, the (a)Cute Economist has just found a way to score publicity points with kids as she modeled the way of properly washing ones hands. We just wonder how this hand washing exercise sounds to people with no regular source of potable water in this country because of government’s weaknesses in basic public service delivery. At any rate, perhaps GMA is indeed a good model on this matter after all. Magaling naman siya maghugas kamay ‘di po ba?

Kagubatang Kho at Katrina. Only last year, September 10, 2008, news raised the alarm that “The Philippines lost forest cover at a rate of 2.1 percent every year from 2000 to 2005, the fastest in southeast Asia and the seventh in the world, said Juan Echanove, a project officer of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines.” No wonder that May 21 this year came and went without nothing as hot as the Kho-Katrina copulation being celebrated by our most repressed and most civil society and its equally perverted mass media. May 21? Oh, that is just the World Forest Day. Di na magubat and Pinas. Makapal pa ang buhok sa dibdib ni Hayden Kho at ang mukha ng ilang mga kabilang sa usaping ito kesa sa ating kagubatan.

Cannoning CARPER Crusaders. And then to top it all off, just yesterday at Congress, cannons were aimed at CARPER (agrarian reform) advocates and they were violently dispersed. For a more personal account of this experience in fascism, see http://capacio.wordpress.com/. Speaker Nograles has just shown us all what a Klingon-Ferengi-Jem’Hadar hybrid he really is -- for the non-Trekkies: that means ASS. Well, what can you expect from this regime and its puppets? The farmers and their supporters wanted to remind Congress of the need to pass this most urgent bill on Agrarian Reform. But what do they get? A bashing from creatures with primeval brains. "We spend a lot of (pause) efforts to keep this place clean…" said Nograles as he tried to defend his order to disperse the farmers who were outside the halls of Congress. What can I say? Can I say PUT@#$%^&+*&=#O Nograles hindi dumi ang mga magsasakang nag-aalaga ng kaning kinakain natin sa araw-araw? Oooopppsss… What did I just say?

Warped interests lead to warped logic, which leads to warped priorities, which lead to warped ways. If only we could warp out of this reality. But sci-fi characters we are not. We can only learn from StarTrek. That is, if we choose to.

By the way, June 5 is just around the corner. In case we forget again, that’s the World Environment Day. I wonder what video will come out next to overshadow our more important concerns on that day. The Belo video anyone?

  1. Sir, I would say the Kho videos not only covered the "more important" World Forest Day agenda by the publics non-stopping interest over it, I would say it also was "an opening". An opening for those in senate and congress to gain publicity by "investigatig" these videos. How laughable! What interest to national security are these videos? What can they do to our nation that THE SENATE would have to "investigate" it. This is the type of thing normal courts handle and they want in to boost their profile for the elections next year. Now, while it would be good if they could pass an anti-porn law, we all know that that is not going to happen... nothing fruitful ever comes out of the senate. When the publicity is all done and gone, they'll just leave their plans for any "bill" they were proposing... That is... if there was even any to begin with or were they all just watching videos? O.o

  2. Why do they all focus on that sex scandal thing? There are more important things to take care of and they focus about Hayden Kho and Katrina Halili?!?! There are more big issues that the government must handle but instead they prioritize more about those scandals. Would finishing that case about the scandal make our country develop more?! I don't think so. I think that those farmers who are asking for land ownership must be given priority than those scandals.
Those farmers are important in our economy, because they strive hard to harvest rice and so we can have something to eat and because of their hard work, their needs must be taken care of also. Instead of pushing them away like they have some disease, we must listen to what they have to say.
Now, about the H1N1 virus, I agree that it is being used as a source of money but because there are 16 affected people now, we must be alarmed and must take safety precautions such as being concerned to our hygiene that's why GMA's campaign in washing hands is not bad and at least it has a good purpose: to teach the children to prevent harmful bacterias by washing hands.

  5. AH1N1 is a transmissible disease. In our country, 16 people have been confirmed to be affected. We must take precautions as concerned citizens so I think the campaign of proper washing of hands is good. It aims to teach the innocent children proper hygiene It's just that GMA should not be the one to model it because the her hands will not be cleaned even if you submerge it into acid or wash it with holy water.

The media has focused too much attention on this stupid sex scandals. There are much more vital things to be discussed than Kho and Halili. She is a bitch and he is a man whore. Media wouldn't cover this issue if it were an ordinary who was violated. If this case would be resolved, what benefit would it give to the majority. I think that politicians, especially Senators Bong Revilla and Pia Cayetano, are just looking for more exposure to the mass media because their terms will be over come 2010 and they want to run for re-election.

  6. Corections, there are 21 people infected now...
About that, I would say that this fuss over it is stupid. Plain and stupid. Why? It is a milder version of the flu. The Death rate is less than 1% of all those infected. With the horribly polluted water in the Philippines(In more rural and poorer areas), people won't be dying of AH1N1, they will be dying because of Malaria, Poisoning, Worms, Typhoid and whatever else is in that "water" of ours O.o Those have much higher death rates... much higher that even with good technology, you still have good shot at death.

  7. Bakit kaya lahat nalang ng pinaguusapan ngayon ay ang Kho-Katrina scandal. I mean... knowing about these things are not going to save our lives. Sir, hindi ako sumisipsip, but talagang eye opener ang entry mong ito. Medyo natamaan ako dahil hindi ako nanonood ng news, and it just shows that people like me are naive in more important things. This Nograles person should be tarred and feathered. Feel niya ang galing galing nya! Siya kaya magtanim, tingnan natin kung makakasurvive siya ng isang oras na nakabilad sa araw. People like him who get payed way way more than farmers and what he does won't even amount to 10% of what the farmers do. Ang mga magsasaka buong araw nakabilad sa araw, tapos siya laging naka aircon. Sa tingin ko talaga the farmers should be paid higher than people like Nograles, since mas complicated and work nila. Also, this scandal thing should be stripped out of the news stations. Grabe, I just realized that a number of Filipinos actually prioritiz sex scandal videos than the health of others and the livelihood of others. Hay! simula ngayon manonood na ako ng news!

  10. N1H1- I would just like to comment on this so called "disease". Last april before i went to states there have been news about the swine flu and how it is so dangerous and killed so many people. it really got me worried, but then when i got there my relatives didn't even care about that too much when in fact they are the ones who live there. they even said that the Philippines doesn't really have anything to talk about making small things into big issues. and i believe that this N1H1 "disease" is just the same. yeah maybe we should learn how to wash our hands and cleanliness is an important thing but the government is just making too much of a deal about this. i believe that there are more things to be worried about than this issue.. like actually improving our economy...

now, the Kho Katrina issue, again something small becoming such a big deal. let's just admit it, both parties did something wrong can we just get over it? it's bad enough that this supposedly private video was spread all over the nation, the Filipinos just had to make it such a big deal. senator hearings here and there, putting this issue on front pages of newspapers and magazines... i mean if everyone just stops talking about it then it will be gone...

  13. Agree! Our thoughts, our logic, our perspective in life! All has been mislead and warped. It's such a shame that we tend to forget what our priorities are. We were blinded by mass media and tell you what, not all broadcasts are making sense, some may do, but those would be very bias.

Filipinos. Kung ano ang bago, makikiuso. Just like the checkered shoes, shorts, pants, etc. Ang bilis nauso nun. If we were to go with checkered, why not go with how chess has always been played? Keeping our heads in the game. Every move counts my ladies and gentlemen, but these days after the move, that's it. We have to analyze things here. The past reflects our future, and if we don't do something about it, this past that we are now making, will be our meaningless future.

  17. I also think that the AH1N1 virus is catching too much attention though it is no major concern. There are truly more things to be thinking of than that. Yes, the disease is a threat to people, but nobody needs to make it sound like it’s the end of the world. If I tell you frankly, I think they make such a big deal out of such a 'petty' thing because they have something bad hidden behind them. If the people are busy thinking of how they would save themselves from such a disease, they would probably forget the other bad things happening in the country (and the world).

  20. I find it foolish that the government is so focused on the sex scandal, considering these things are pretty normal in today's depraved society. They are wasting too much effort on these cases, rather than spending time solving the other thousands of economic problems. I believe that we too, are "masyadong nagpapaaffect" from this event, which adds up to the "heat" of this issue, which then makes the whole society talk more about this shallow thing. I believe that we can help reduce the government's attention to this shallow issue by starting with ourselves in feeding our minds with more sensible political issues instead of these scandals.

May I say that your quote “Warped interests lead to warped logic, which leads to warped priorities, which lead to warped ways.” reminds me of this quote by Charles Reade:
Sow a thought, and you reap an act; Sow an act, and you reap a habit; Sow a habit, and you reap a character; Sow a character, and you reap a destiny.”

I agree that our morality starts with our thoughts or interests. The way we are, shall be warped if our interests are warped. The way we are, shall be straightened if our interests are straightened, and the economy shall be what we are.

I hope that government officials would use World Environment Day for campaigning, rather than using their concerns in scandalous issues for their campaigns.

"kaso ng h1n1, lalong tumaas! Pilipinas, may pnika marami nang kaso sa South East Asia!"

ok. its all over the news.. BUT what i don't understand is the virus itself.
Yes, its scary because alot of people of diffrent ages are highly infected by it, its very contagiuos, the media shows the preventive measures, and etc. In other words, its one of the most disturbing and most famous virus so far that inflicted the whole world. YES, we are educated, but not educated enough.
The meda basically reports overactingly so as to make this issue a more buzzing one. They sounded like its really the end of the world if you got infected.I think its the people's right to know what will happen to you if youare positive. They should show if its like cancer that has many stages, they should be responsible for letting the community know what the real deal is. or else, it may be a social chaos, whether to agree that we should be histerical in dealing the problem beacuse its not that seriuos or the opposite.
The government is alsi part of this lackness. They should be implementing rules like wearing masks is a must of you go out instead of making a big deal out of katrina and hayden's sex videos.

This concerns the AH1N1 virus, nung lumabas yung news natakot tlga ako, I was sick for 4 days, and nagpatest ako sa RITM, at first, it’s really scary but we should keep in mind that it’s just another foreign disease. I think the problem is wala pa talagang gamot for the virus but for the flu meron na yung tamiflu or relenza na nirerecommend nila for 10 days if you are exposed to a confirmed case of ah1n1 virus infection. Siguro dapat nga proper hygiene and ingat palagi. Mas madami pang virus ang dadating sa pinas, kasi kung ngeevolve ang technology, I suppose ganun din ang virus mas dadami pa yan so panu un? 24. sir, regarding the H1N1, they're doing this prevention because the disease is very contagious and deadly. Maybe they can make money out of advertisements and people tend to buy more medicine, but the fact remains that the virus is real. they don't make up stories and scare people just to earn money.

And regarding the issue about the philippines losing forests at a high rate, it's not the government who cuts the trees. it is the people. maybe they're trying to focus more on katrina and hayden's scandal because they want to say to the people that it's time to be better people, not immoral citizens. You should respect your fellow filipino and the philippines. what i'm trying to say is that everyone should do their job to make this country better.

  26. Can i just comment on how house speaker treated OUR farmers?! Reading this specific blog hyped me up. I think that Mr. Speaker is not really thnking hard when he said those words. I think he was busy thinking about CON ASS and not taking in consideration more important issues like what is mentioned above. How selfish and self-centered. If we want to lessen poverty, i think we should help our farmers. Our farmers give us food that we put in our plates. Our farmers need all the help that they can get. They are over worked but under paid. Instead of dealing with not-so-relevant issues, why not concentrate with this bill. Why do we always have to divert the issue when it comes to the most important things to be discussed? Are our officials these dumb to not see the more relevant issues? And they chose to tackle more the scandal. My thirteen year old cousin could even pinpoint which issue is more relevant. Lahat ay pampa-guwapo lang ng mga pulitiko!

Im not totally against the probing of the scandal but then i think that it already had too much exposure. Coming this election, i think that the voters should think very well who they will elect as public official. Think long term rather short term. That is what we lack, the lack of proper long term planning.

  28. The important issues to be talked about are being outshadowed by news that are now hot and controversial even if they can't affect us as much as the important ones does. The never ending Hayden and Katrina controversy. If you come to think of it, it doesn't affect us much but they are celebrities. Therefore, we like to talk about them. If they are the hot issue, politicians would want to be involved thinking that election time is just around the corner. If a politician would be involved in Forest Day or such, who would notice what he is doing? No one. But if he gets involved in Kho controversy, everyone will notice. It will boost his popularity and then he could win the election. In the end, it's still about the politicians interest.

We can talk about these issues as much as we want but let's not forget our responsibility in being involved in other more important activities. All of us may be complaining why don't they do this or that but we must also consider what we can do. Making the first step is what we should do. If we don't care about the important issues, we will lose the good things that we have now. We will suffer in the end. So let's think of what "ako mismo" we can do now.

I think A(H1N1) is more important than that even though some of the people are making a big deal out of it. There is a cure! But of course, we should go to the clinic if we have a flu, sore throat or whatever the symptoms are so it will not get worse and also we should be quarantined if we have those symptoms so the others will not be infected.
